About Me
Aishah Olabisi Balogun is a multidisciplinary artist and all around creative, working at the intersection of analog photography, poetry, and video. As an artist, I'm interested in constantly exploring questions of the self and personal and familial histories. I see myself at the center of almost everything I create, whether I am physically in front of the camera and utilizing my own body as a tool or projecting an experience or feeling into a creation. I am always looking for ways to better understand myself, and I find that the discoveries which come from creating are usually the most introspective.
Born to Nigerian parents in Atlanta, Georgia, I'm fascinated by the diasporic identity. How I and others around the world navigate Blackness with our direct African lineage. I am also equally intrigued by human connections, and the overwhelming role perception plays in our interactions with those we consider strangers.
There are many questions I ponder when creating, some I’ve read or heard and others which I’ve thought of myself: What am I interested in? What or who am I investigating? What moves me? What moves me to action? What is it that I’m afraid of? Why? How can I confront it? What would I like this to do? And most importantly, Who would I like to be?
